POD vs. POD

These acronyms are used to refer to Print on Demand and Publish on Demand.

Print on Demand

This term refers to a new process of publishing growing more popular with the larger publishers. This process allows distributors to order any number of publications to be printed per order.

What this does is benefit the publishers who have a return policy with their distributors to print only what is ordered or sold. This prevents overstocks and the need to dispose of unneeded publications along with the need for extra warehouse space.

Publish on Demand (Vanity Press)

By Definition, Vanity Press publishers are publishers who charge you to publish your writings. These are also referred to as POD, or Publish on Demand companies.
